8. Innocence

Determined she looks at the gruesome sight ahead, set on taking in every detail of the ghastly scene. Beneath her the mare is skittish, straining against her command to keep going, but she keeps the reins firmly between her fingers. There is no turning back, not anymore.
The rider in front of her turns in his saddle to look at her. He is watching her, she knows. Whe he notices her staring at the hanged man and the crows that pick at the corpse's dead eyes, he frowns.
"Don't look at it, girl", he says. "'tis not for innocent eyes."
She struggles not to laugh bitterly at his words.
"I am not innocent", she whispers. Angrily she feels tears gathering hotly in her eyes. "I haven't been for a long time..."
